Meditation, contemplation and prayer enable you to reach beyond yourself, or deeply into yourself, to become aware of your connection to your sense of divinity. The Divine is known by many names in different traditions and countries.

The Benefits of Connecting With The Divine
When you welcome Divine Power into your life, you will begin to experience that you are not alone. You are a cell of the Universe, part of the Greater Whole of creation. It is the experience of many people that, contrary to their expectations, when they reach “out” to God, they are not going away from themselves but returning more deeply to their own core or essence.

According to William Penn of Pennsylvania, “True worship is to mind and spirit, what sleep is to the body, - nourishment and refreshment”. Scientific studies, described by Dr. Larry Dossey and others, also indicate that prayer and meditation have a very positive affect towards healing, reducing high blood pressure, healing wounds and increasing the germination of seeds.

Enlisting Help
People of many traditions call on aspects of God, such as the powers of the four directions, (North, East, South and West), or the four elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water), for support. Or they ask messengers of God (Jesus, angels, guardians or saints) to intercede on their behalf as they invoke the power of prayer. You can call on the Divine and on aspects of God in whatever way you choose.

Silence
Silence is an important part of meditation and prayer. Silence enables you to turn inwards and “practice the presence of God”. You can choose to experience a silence of open expectation and waiting - where you are receptive and responsive to the Spirit, since God is always waiting to give more than you know to ask. Or perhaps you will choose to be in a silence of focused attention where you continue to fill your mind, quietly and deliberately, with thoughts of God or the highest good that you know, e.g. truth, beauty, love. Thus you will become more closely attuned to whatever that highest good might be.

If being silent in this way is new to you, I suggest that you experiment from time to time by taking 5-10 minutes waiting in silence, inviting the Spirit of Life. Especially good times to do this would be before or after listening to an audio of calming music, or when you are out for a walk stop at a peaceful place. Just continue to be quiet and become receptive to the Unknown.
